If you are an avid Pinterest-user then you probably have seen the pins about “Brownie in a Mug.” We thought it would be a fun to call Shenanigans on this Pinterest classic to see if it really works! Here is the link to the original pin.
The Recipe calls for:
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup flour
2 tbsp cocoa
1 pinch of salt
2 tbsp olive oil
3 tbsp of water
We added: Handfull of chocolate chips
1) Mix all of the listed ingredients and add as many chocolate chips as you would like.
2) Microwave for 1 minute 40 seconds.
3) Voilà ! Brownie in a mug! (Below is a before and after microwave picture)
The brownie in a mug does indeed work, but keep in mind that it is not as sweet as most store-bought brownies. It has a dark chocolate (a little bitter) taste when compared to a traditional brownie. It also has a much more cake-like than fudge-y texture. We think that this recipe could be adapted to be a little better, so we are going to experiment by adding a few of our own additions to this recipe. We will be sure to post any that turn out well! Please comment below if you have any versions of this recipe that you like better!
Although it did work we did not fully revoke shenanigans, because we believe that it could have tasted a little bit better than it did.

so quick and easy and full of chocolaty goodness!! 🙂
The recipe I have, calls for 4 TBS flour, 4 TBS sugar, 2 TBS cocoa, 2 TBS water, and 2 TBS oil. I nuke them for 11/2 minute, and they come out really fudge like and very chocolaty. I found that if you nuke them till they’re cake like, they don’t taste as good. They taste better slightly under cooked.
This is my recipe, too. It makes a great brownie, taste and texture are very good. As you said, how long you microwave it matters, too.
Interesting post! thanks for sharing! =)

Nice post, and also nice blog. You remind me of the Mythbusters, but solely for Pinterest!
On a chocolate-in-a-mug related note, you should try this recipe: http://www.notquitenigella.com/2009/05/29/the-five-minute-chocolate-mug-cake/
It’s not a brownie, but if you put some chocolate chips or chocolate chunks at the bottom of the mug and make sure it doesn’t overcook, it does become an excellent and very rich chocolate lava cake. And it’s in a mug 🙂
Haha, that’s kinda what we were going for, there are just so many things on Pinterest that don’t work, we thought others may be having the same problems…And that lava cake sounds a amazing! We will have to try it!

Thanks for your comment and have a great day! 🙂
Three two one cake….1 angel food cake mix + 1 cake mix of your choice (devils food, perchance) pour together into a gallon sized freezer bag. When you are jonesing for chocolate brownie goodness…3 T dry mix + 2T water + choco chips, walnuts ect…what ever you like, I put in a little espresso or some dark choc. Mix together in cup and microwave 1 minute. There you go, keeps forever in cupboard and is so good when you need a choc fix
Thats Awesome! We will definitely have to try that! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Always have 3-2-1- cake ready to nuke in our pantry. We have tried several kinds; all good. We often use sugar-free mix. I have found it works better with an all in one angel food mix rather than the kind that has the egg whites in a separate package.
